Psychotherapy Institute
Empowering Clinicians. Transforming Outcomes. Next cohort starts September 22 & 23, 2026
About the Psychotherapy Institute
The Psychotherapy Institute (PI) offers a different approach to help therapists better serve our patients and community. The PI integrates high-quality training, implementation support, and organizational transformation to empower providers and improve patient outcomes—ensuring that effective care truly makes a difference.
Just as medical fellowships provide physicians with deep, specialized training to advance their expertise, the Psychotherapy Institute creates a parallel pathway for mental health professionals. This is a rare opportunity for clinicians to pause, refine, and elevate their craft in a structured, high-support learning environment. Through immersive training, expert-guided practice, and sustained mentorship, clinicians build true mastery—gaining the skills, confidence, and precision needed to consistently deliver transformative care.
The Psychotherapy Institute is more than continuing education. It is an investment in clinicians as highly skilled practitioners whose work shapes the health of individuals, families, and communities.
Our approach
Transdiagnostic Treatments:
Emphasis on treatments that address core psychological processes underlying multiple disorders, equipping patients with skills and strategies for managing symptoms across diagnoses.
Unified Protocol Clinic:
Unified Protocol is an innovative, emotion-focused treatment that targets core psychological processes underlying multiple disorders. The protocol’s aim is to equip patients with skills and strategies for managing symptoms across diagnoses. Additional support and training is also available for Unified Protocol for Adolescents (UP-A).
Measurement-Based Care:
Use of outcome data collection tools and fidelity monitoring to ensure high-quality, effective care.
"Providing this type of enhanced training for our psychotherapists will help put us on a path for improved patient results."
-Tammer Attallah, Executive Clinical Director, Behavior Health Clinical Program
Training and Certification Pathways
Level I: Intermountain Health-Unified Protocol Workshop:
This 1.25 day workshop offers an overview of Intermountain Health-Unified Protocol (IH-UP), a transdiagnostic treatment designed specifically for caregivers in the Intermountain Region. This adaptation of the Unified Protocol, an evidenced based, transdiagnostic treatment approach that targets common elements of emotional disturbance present in multiple disorders, offers a efficient and effective condensed version of the Unified Protocol. The Unified Protocol is particularly effective with anxiety and depressive disorders, which are among the most common mental illnesses experienced by youth and adult populations. This orientation workshop also introduces psychotherapists to a growth mindset framework that emphasizes learning through practice, openness to feedback, and continuous professional development as the foundation for program participation.
- Open to all Intermountain psychotherapists; no ongoing commitment required; community psychotherapists may also apply
- Adapted for Intermountain and delivered by Unified Protocol Institute experts
- Providers may also attend additional 1-day training on Unified Protocol for Adolescents (UP-A)
Level I: Unified Protocol-Adolescent Foundational Workshop:
This one day workshop on the Unified Protocol for Adolescents (UP-A) offers an overview of the Unified Protocol framework for providers who offer treatment to younger populations. This workshop orients providers to the theory, background and core treatment elements of the full 8 module, 16 session, Unified Protocol applied to adolescents. Completion of the UP-IH workshop is not required. This orientation workshop also introduces psychotherapists to a growth mindset framework that emphasizes learning through practice, openness to feedback, and continuous professional development as the foundation for program participation.

Level II: Psychotherapy Institute Intermountain Health Unified Protocol (IH-UP) and Unified Protocol-Adolescent (UP-A) Certifications
Though workshops offer a critical first step for sustained application, they are often not sufficient for effective practice in a model. To better support clinicians in developing confidence and mastery in an intervention, The level II Psychotherapy Institute Certification offers collaborative high-quality training and consultation to providers. Following completion of consultive training, providers enrolled in Level II Certification will participate in supportive community of practice groups where fidelity recording, monitoring, and measurement-based care will be key tools that help us ensure our care practices are consistently aligned with the Unified Protocol model—so we can deliver the best possible outcomes for our patients. This process is part of a collective effort to identify what's working by learning together. This opportunity offers shared opportunities to reflect on practice, celebrate strengths, and make meaningful, data-informed adjustments while fostering a culture of growth. Consultative training provided every other week by experts in the Unified Protocol and Unified Protocol Adolescent (UP-A). Includes consultive training and six months of participation in a robust Community of Practice, featuring:
- Access to expert consultants from Intermountain Health Clinical Program, the Unified Protocol Institute, and Weber Human Services
- AI-enabled support for clinical practice
- Ongoing coaching plus fidelity monitoring designed to maximize clinical outcomes
- Completion of Level I required
- Up to 28 hours of expert-led education & coaching
- Enrollment in Community of Practice learning collaboratives where providers have access to a supportive provider network
Level III: Psychotherapy Institute’s Unified Protocol and Unified Protocol-Adolescent Master Certification
Select providers may receive additional training to train others to deliver Unified Protocol to patients. Layering training for mastery with strategies for implementation, these providers will go on to train others in the model and lead out on communities of practice guiding level II participants. Supports provided to these psychotherapists include organizational change management strategy consultation, psychotherapist training and coaching in EBTs, data use consultation, leadership consultation, and performance evaluation consultation. These selected providers may be offered future opportunities to partner with the institute and continue to develop as coaches and implementation experts. If not initially selected for level III certification, level II providers are encouraged to work towards expert level mastery, and evaluation for level III certification shall be considered with subsequent cohorts.
A 16-week advanced consultative training led by expert-level Unified Protocol clinicians. Designed to support your pathway to mastery, including:
- Expert-level skill development
- Train-the-trainer level certification
- Support in management, coaching, and leadership
Anticipated Impact:
Providers enrolled in Level II and Level III certifications who use the Unified Protocol to a high level of fidelity may see over 70% of patients significantly improve.
