About the program
This Pediatric Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship at Primary Children’s Hospital in Utah is a dynamic, 12-month program, designed to empower newly graduated Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) to thrive in high-acuity, fast paced pediatric emergency medicine settings.
Our program offers immersive clinical experience in the emergency department, rotations with subspecialty groups, hands-on procedural training, didactic education, and mentorship.
This is an exciting opportunity to learn the essential skills, confidence, and clinical judgement to provider exceptional care to acutely ill and injured children.

Clinical Practice: 80%
- Clinical Experiences in the Emergency Department: 20%
Phased orientation in five phases:- 1st Phase: Shadowing pediatric emergency medicine physicians
- 2nd Phase: Shadowing experienced advanced practice providers
- 3rd Phase: Clinical experiences paired with experienced advanced practice providers
- 4th Phase: Independent clinical practice with advanced practice providers scheduled simultaneously to be utilized as needed as a resource
- 5th Phase: Independent clinical practice with pediatric emergency medicine physicians scheduled simultaneously
- Rotations with Pediatric Subspecialties
- General Surgery/Trauma Service
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
- Orthopedics
- ENT/Plastic Surgery
- Hematology/Oncology
Didactic Education: 20%
- Weekly Wednesday Conferences and Lectures
- One-on-one didactic education with pediatric emergency medicine attendings
- Procedure classes and workshops
- Procedure based shifts for practice
- Simulation Labs
- Self-Directed Online Pediatric Emergency Medicine Bootcamp
- Advanced Trauma Life Support Certification (ATLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification (if not already obtained)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ALS) Certification (if not already obtained)

Applicants selected for employment in the program must:
- Have graduated from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
- PA or APRN and Controlled Substance License in the state of Utah
- DEA Certificate II through V
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Certification
Please Note: One need not be fully licensed or have completed the certification exam at the time of application; however, selected applicants must obtain all licenses before the start of the program.

About our team
Our advanced practice provider team is made up of nineteen advanced practice providers with a wide range of clinical experience and background. Each provider will typically care for approximately 100 – 150 patients per month across all acuity levels. We work together with a growing team of 49 Attendings and we enjoy a culture of inclusion as an important part of the emergency department team.

Schedule
The fellow will work a variable schedule combined of three shift times including:
- 0800-1700
- 1500-0000
- 1700-0200
Fellows will work four 9-hour shifts per week. Approximately 2/3 of the shifts will be night and/or weekend shifts. Fellows will also be expected to work holidays on a rotating schedule.
This will be in addition to 2-8 hours of didactic education weekly. Some weeks will only include Wednesday conferences for their education time, other weeks there will be more education requirements or other self-directed learning for which fellows will be responsible for.
Fellows will have guaranteed education time for their Weekly Wednesday Education. They will not be scheduled on Tuesday nights, or Wednesday days to protect that education time.
Fellows should plan to work over forty hours a week between clinical and didactic time.
