Learn more about living liver donation

Becoming a living donor is a way to help someone you love, or one of many people on the national waiting list, to receive a life-saving organ by giving a part of yours. Those in greatest need for living donors are women and children on the transplant waiting list.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions regarding liver transplants

The liver is a large organ on the right side of your abdomen. It filters toxins, processes medications, helps digest nutrients, and makes important proteins for your body. When the liver becomes severely damaged and can no longer do these jobs, you may need to be evaluated for a liver transplant based on standard liver transplant criteria.

People with serious liver disease may stay stable for a while with medication and lifestyle changes, such as stopping alcohol use or losing weight. But sometimes, liver failure continues to progress. When this happens, a liver transplant may be the only effective treatment.

Unlike kidney disease, End Stage Liver Disease (E.S.L.D.) has no dialysis option. A specialist team will evaluate you to see if you meet liver transplant criteria.

Depending on your health and situation, you may qualify for:

  • A traditional liver transplant
  • A living donor liver transplant (when a liver transplant donor gives a portion of their liver)
  • A partial liver transplant (using part of a liver from a living or deceased donor)

Your care team will guide you through the best option.

Liver transplant outcomes have improved greatly over the past several decades. Today, one‑year survival rates often exceed 95%. Most patients are able to return to everyday activities with a good quality of life. After the first two years, many people only need yearly check‑ins, routine blood tests, and ongoing medications.

Newer medications, better surgical techniques, and strong experience with procedures like living donor liver transplant and partial liver transplant have all helped improve results. The Intermountain Transplant Center continues to achieve patient survival rates above the national average, with shorter waiting times than many other programs.
