About our program

The purpose of the St. Vincent PGY1 pharmacy residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Where we train

St. Vincent Regional Hospital is a not-for-profit, faith-based, regional destination hospital with a comprehensive range of services including Level I Trauma Center, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Medicine, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and General Surgery, Level III NICU and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Residents have the opportunity to mentor pharmacy students from The University of Montana and interact with physicians from the Montana Family Medicine Residency Program. Residents can earn a teaching certificate offered through the University of Montana. Billings is conveniently located near the Beartooth Mountains and Yellowstone National Park.

Required rotations include orientation, medicine, ambulatory care, cardiology, critical care, pediatrics, and emergency medicine. Elective rotations include administration, ambulatory oncology, infectious diseases, emergency medicine II/trauma, and advanced ambulatory care. Longitudinal rotations include service staffing, project management, drug information, and practice management

Rotations

Application Deadline

  • All application information must be received in PhORCAS prior to 10 pm MST on January 2nd, 2026

Applicants must submit the following information through the PhORCAS system:

  • PhORCAS standard residency application
  • Expected to obtain Pharmacist licensure within the first 90 days in the state of the residency program
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Three recommendations (per standard PhORCAS form)
  • Letter of intent
  • College of pharmacy transcripts
  • Supplemental Essay - Answer the question below in 250 words or less
    • Tell us about a mistake that you learned from. What did you learn?
  • Complete all 52 weeks of the residency program, including all required experiences
  • Successfully completes both hospital and departmental orientation programs with licensure by October 1st
  • Achievement of Intermountain Health and St. Vincent Regional Hospital required educational competencies, goals and objectives
    • Attain “achieved” on at least 80% of all objectives (including 100% of the objectives in competency areas surrounding patient care) within each of the 9 listed goals and attain satisfactory progress on all other objectives not documented as achieved by the end of the residency year.
  • Completes all evaluations and requirements in PharmAcademic
  • Maintain good standing with the department of pharmacy with adherence to departmental policies and procedures
  • Complete required service/staffing hours and required departmental competencies
  • Schedule and attend quarterly performance evaluation meetings with program director
  • ASHP duty hours standards tracking form through PharmAcademic
  • Teaching certificate administered through ASHP and portfolio (optional)

  • Residents are required to complete central pharmacy orientation and demonstrate ability to staff independently prior to first weekend shift
  • Residents are expected to work 10-hour shifts for weekend staffing (centralized shifts, either 0700-1730 or 1030-2100)
  • Minimum local staffing requirement for completion of residency: 350 hours.
    • This includes:
      • Approximately 5 initial staffing days following orientation period and initial training
      • Approximately 5 staffing days mid-way through residency year
      • Required staffing every third weekend, on average
      • Required staffing on three holidays (recognized holidays: 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Memorial Day).
        • One must be Thanksgiving or Christmas

Resident Salary

  • Approximate PGY1 stipend: $61,000 per year

Pharmacy Resident Benefits

  • Classified as full-time employees of Intermountain Health
  • Paid a competitive resident salary
  • Eligible to receive a complete benefits package including retirement, health, dental, vision and life insurance
  • PTO is accrued at the rate according to hospital policy (currently approximately 25 days per year). This rate is subject to adjustment. The resident should generally expect to use ≤ 18 days of PTO during the residency year and may not use more than 25 days
  • Access to other employee benefits such as the employee wellness program, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) support, and the employee discount program.

Professional Development

  • Intermountain Health will provide travel support for one professional conference. Options may include ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting or Pharmacy Futures Meeting, Pediatric Pharmacy Association (PPA) Annual Meeting, or other specialty conference such as Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM).
  • In addition, internal CE and other professional development opportunities are offered on a regular basis.

Research

Complete one longitudinal research project suitable for publication during the residency year. Successful completion incorporates the following elements:

  • Identify research topic
  • Formulate study design and data collection form
  • Submit project for Institutional Review Board approval
  • Complete data collection and analysis
  • Write manuscript
  • Poster presentation
  • Podium presentation

Teaching Opportunities

  • Prepare and present a 1-hour seminar at home facility for pharmacists
  • Prepare and present a 1-hour, system-wide broadcasted ACPE-accredited presentation for pharmacists and technicians
  • Develop and deliver one platform presentation and one poster presentation at a regional, state, national or other approved conference meeting
  • Complete Teaching Certificate

Longitudinal Didactic Education (Core Curriculum)

Residents attend regular education sessions to support their growth as a pharmacy practitioner, develop "soft skills," promote resident collaboration, and enhance overall wellness. Example training domains include the following:
