A new chapter of health and healing in Billings

A once-in-a-generation investment to support patients, families, and caregivers across our region for decades to come.

Intermountain Health is building a new Intermountain Health St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Billings, Montana — an investment designed to support patients, families, and caregivers across the community, state, and region for decades to come.

At a glance

  • Location: 27th Street and 12th Avenue North, just east of the current hospital building
  • Size: 14 floors, 737,000 square feet
  • Type of project: Full replacement of the current Intermountain St. Vincent facility (all current services will transfer to the new building when it opens)
  • Capacity: 243 patient beds, with space planned for 16 additional beds when needed
  • Timeline: Construction began in June 2025, with completion anticipated in 2029

St. Vincent Regional Hospital has deep roots, from our humble beginning as Billings’ first hospital, founded by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth to reveal and foster God’s healing love as we care for our community to an innovative, nationally ranked hospital for safety and quality,” said Lee Boyles, president of St. Vincent Regional Hospital and the Montana | Wyoming Market of Intermountain Health.

"And now, we are entering our next chapter: building a replacement hospital to support the work of our incredible caregivers and foster a healthy community".

Innovative design for patients and caregivers

Intermountain Health is replacing the current facility to address aging infrastructure and to create a modern, efficient hospital designed for today’s care and adaptable for the future.

The hospital’s design is intended to support the evolving nature of healthcare and help teams respond to changing patient needs over time.

  • Flexible patient rooms: Rooms are designed to be universal, with the ability to convert to ICU-level care when needed.
  • Built for growth: Space is planned to add 16 additional beds as demand grows.
  • Adaptable operating rooms: Operating rooms are designed for multiple types of procedures and to support current and future technology, including robotic surgical advances.
  • More efficient surgical flow: Pre-op, operating rooms, and recovery areas are co-located to support more efficient care.

We are constructing a replacement hospital to improve the healthcare in Billings and surrounding states for future generations and to build a healthier community for all we serve,” said Rob Allen, president & CEO of Intermountain Health. “The new St. Vincent Regional Hospital will enhance the care experience of our patients, families and caregivers as it will be the most staff-efficient facility in the region.

Designed for a better patient, visitor, and caregiver experience

  • Dedicated public space (first floor): A first-floor layout designed for patients and visitors, including a chapel, outpatient pharmacy, gift shop, and discharge lounge.
  • Improved entrances: A public entrance with an outdoor garden and capacity for multiple streams of traffic to improve flow. A separate emergency department entrance designed for safety, security, privacy, and efficient critical care, including a covered ambulance garage entrance.
  • Care closer to patients: Decentralized nursing stations on all floors to help caregivers stay closer to patients. Most rooms will have large windows for natural light and views of Billings. Separate staff, patient, and visitor entrances and elevators are intended to support privacy and a quieter healing environment.

Community and economic impact

Intermountain Health plans to build on the current St. Vincent campus in the heart of the existing medical corridor in Billings.

  • Construction workforce: At the high point in construction, an estimated 600–700 workers will be on site. Intermountain anticipates about 1,200 total workers will be involved over the course of the project.
  • Additional local jobs: An estimated 500 additional local jobs are expected to be created in the community to support the workforce and project.

The new hospital is poised to be a significant driver of economic growth in Yellowstone County and the city of Billings,” said Boyles. “Intermountain Health is excited to be making this investment on the current St. Vincent campus in the heart of the existing medical corridor in Billings. We look forward to building a broad coalition of philanthropic, clinical, and community partners committed to transforming healthcare in our region.
